Drag and Drop Automated FarmBot Just Blew Past Its $100k Goal

Drag and Drop Automated FarmBot Just Blew Past Its $100k Goal

A friend of mine just shared a link to a very cool new Kickstarter project called FarmBot. It just so happens, they blew by their $100,000 goal today (they're at $103k and counting), with over two weeks to go on the crowdfunding platform. Powered by open source software, FarmBot is a CNC machine built for home farming. The basic unit is priced at $2,900 for pre-orders. The kit's footprint is approximately 4' x 10', big enough to sustain one person's diet of fresh vegetables year-round. It's also scalable and extensible, making FarmBot capable of delivering a commercially viable automated farming operation.

Founded and currently operated by a team of three (Rory, Rick and Tim) out of a home on Upham Street in San Luis Obispo, California, FarmBot is a Benefit Corporation, dedicated to open source hardware, software and business practices.  FarmBot has a great deal of community support from Kickstarter fans, but the support started much earlier, with a grant from the Shuttleworth Foundation. According to FarmBot, the grant helped to fund Founder Rory Aronson's work for a year, starting in March of 2014. Additionally, FarmBot credits support from OpenBuilds, Willowfields Enterprises, and 3Design Products.

GoBone: Play With Your Dog at Home While You're at Work

GoBone: Play With Your Dog at Home While You're at Work

KickStarter sales for GoBone hit its goal in just five days.

The GoBone was recently pitched on KickStarter as a smartbone to keep dogs active with automatic, all-day entertainment while the owner is away. They reached their goal of $60,000 in just five days, and as of today, the project is nearly at triple its goal, at nearly $150,000. The GoBone is for remote automated play, but it can also be used as an app-controlled gaming device for owners to interact with and play with their dogs in a fun, unique way when they are apart, or together.

“As a dog owner and animal shelter volunteer, I know how much being bored and lonely can stress a dog,” says Santiago Gutierrez, CEO and founder. “When I created the GoBone, my original goal was to keep my dog Rufus entertained while he was home alone. But then I realized the GoBone could also be used to improve the bond between owners and their pets through interactive games they can play together. When we tested the GoBone initially, we did so with shelter dogs of all sizes. I saw the impact it made so donating to a local Dallas shelter just made sense as a great way to give back.”

Just Released: Bolt 3.0

This news was just shared with us by Bob at Bolt CMS: We are proud and glad to present Bolt 3.0.0 stable to you, today. A lot has changed in Bolt 3, both under-the-hood as well as from a visual perspective and there are quite a few new features too. Bolt 3 has matured, and grown into a very extensible tool, that can be used both as a straightforward CMS, as well as a platform to build your custom applications on.

Bolt 3.0 Improvements:

Clean structure, easy updates

The default installation of Bolt is now a pre-packaged composer installation. In practice this means you can simply download a .tar.gz or .zip file to get started, and keep that updated by simply renaming one file, and running composer update. We provide a bunch of other installation options too, like 'composer installs', 'regular FTP', 'cloning from git'. As an added benefit, the default installation now keeps all PHP and configuration files outside of the webroot.

On The Move: OpenText Announces Agreement Buy HP's DX Assets For $170M

Acquisition by OpenText Aims To Strengthen Enterprise Information Management Offerings

Enterprise software giant OpenText announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement to buy HP TeamSite and other DX-related software and service-related assets from HP. The $170 Million purchase price seems like a smart buy for OpenText, with anticipated earnings of $85M - $95M annually (2x earnings).

"Interwoven and Vignette are finally getting married."  - Tony White

Tony White continued: "Although TeamSite hasn't recently been purchased by enterprises for new implementations, there are some very valuable pieces of the technology that make it attractive for an information management vendor.  Autonomy understood that.  So does OpenText, especially in conjunction with the other applications OpenText picked up from HP." Tony White is the founder of Ars Logica, a Boston-based DX Analyst Firm.

The software assets to be acquired include: HP TeamSite, a modern multi-channel digital experience management platform for web content management, HP MediaBin, a digital asset management solution, HP Qfiniti, an intelligent workforce optimization solution designed to improve enterprise contact center management, as well as HP Explore, HP Aurasma.  More information on these solutions can be found at www.hpengage.com

What Is DX?

What Is DX?

It's Like CMS (with more experience).

It's no secret that there are some big players in the Digital Experience technology sector who have finally shifted from labeling themselves as a "CMS" to a new acronym, with one-third less clarity: "DX."  Worse yet, DX (Digital Experience) can easily be confused by two sister-nyms, "CX," (Customer Experience), and her evil twin, "WEM," (Web Experience Management).

So, What Constitutes "DX"?

I've boiled it down to a very simple solution (see infographic on this page) to answer that very question. Some may think it's too simple, but I like things simple enough to explain in a short elevator ride. Here's my take. Bottom line is, Digital Experience is not a single purpose application, it's a multi-purpose suite of applications which boil down to four key functions: content, marketing, sales and support. There's a lot more to it than that under each broad category, but together, they are the pillar technologies used by owners and administrators to create and maintain the Customer Experience in a digital, augmented, or real-world scenario.

Rightpoint Buys Oasis To Form Single North American Digital Agency

Rightpoint Buys Oasis To Form Single North American Digital Agency

The digital agency roll-up continues today with the acquisition of Boston-based Agency Oasis by Chicago-based digital agency, Rightpoint. Soon, Agency Oasis will be re-branded Rightpoint, with three co-CEOs. The acquisition looks to be a smart mash-up of two middle-tier boutique agencies, each with a healthy client portfolio, into a more formidable and unified North American agency, with over 300 employees.

The agencys' client lists are impressive, and their marketing technology services center around healthy brands such as Sitecore, Salesforce, episerver and Microsoft (among others).  Fueled by a $55 million investment last year by New York based Stella Point Capital, Rightpoint's acquisition helps position them to better serve its North American and international markets, as well as further specialization in key enterprise content, marketing and sales technologies.

Top 20 CMS 2.0 Criteria Metrics For Success

Times have changed, and unlike just a few short years ago, today's CMS Pros are seeking better information on unified Content, Marketing, Sales and Support (aka "CMSS" or what we call "CMS 2.0") technology and best practices.

Specifically, I've focused on the CMS Connection's blog (the section you're now reading, by the way), making it easier to use, more secure (notice the "https" designation?), and much faster-loading.  You'll notice I'll be in continuous improvement mode now, when it comes to design and development needs here on The CMS Connection, re-creating the Directory, adding the ability to comment on products and services, and a few other goodies up my sleeve in 2016...

Rochen: First To Offer Free SSL For Its Hosting Customers

Rochen: First To Offer Free SSL For Its Hosting Customers

This news just in, from Rochen Hosting: Within the past few weeks, Rochen has integrated the Let’s Encrypt SSL project as a feature into the cPanel for our Premium Web Hosting (PWH) customers. This means Rochen hosting customers can now enable HTTPS for premium hosting customer websites without incurring any SSL certificate costs. Further, because Rochen uses Server Name Indication (SNI) technology, there are no costs for dedicated IPs either.

HTTPS = Better Security + Better SEO

As we've noted in previous articles here on the CMS Connection, in addition to the security benefits, enabling HTTPS for sites can provide Search Engine Optimization (SEO) advantages as well, as Google is now weighting SSL-enabled sites more favorably. One of our Spotlight CMSs at CMS Connection, MODX, noted that their page rank jumped immediately to Google's front page, upon switching over to Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol.

Cross your fingers and hope this might be a trend! If you've been waiting for disruption to return to the open source CMS technology world, the past week sure delivered! Call For Reviewers: PeepSo Social Network Plugin for WordPress

So, "PeepSo" for WordPress just recently launched. I'll be writing my own review of PeepSo soon, and in doing so, rather than just supply my own opinion, I wanted to invite some other folks who actually use and develop with WordPress social networking plugins to be part of this review process.  Content without context is rather useless, so this is a call for experienced sitebuilders, developers and end-users in the social networking realm (think BuddyPress).

So consider yourself invited!

If YOU are interested in taking part in our PeepSo review, please contact me here, and I'll get you started. We should have this wrapped up pretty quick, to get a well-rounded review here for all to see and share.  I look forward to hearing from you, particularly if you're already involved working with BuddyPress, or any other of WordPress' current social networking plugins.

ThemeButler Launches With an Experimental Business Model

ThemeButler Launches With an Experimental Business Model

WordPress Themes on ThemeButler are 100% free to use. Yeah, so how does that work?

Longtime WordPress theme designer and front-end wizard Chris Rault just launched a brand-new WordPress theme company, called ThemeButler. Beyond the theme designs themselves, which are top notch, I think what you'll find interesting about this new venture is Chris' experimental new business model: The themes aren't paid for by the people who actually use them.

Said another way, these high-performance themes are 100% free to download and use, with no strings attached. They're GPL licensed, and they're incredibly fast-performing, built on the new Beans framework for WordPress. There's no required advertising or link-backs, no hidden privacy grabs or anything like that. Instead, sponsors pay ThemeButler to create some of the coolest, fastest, kick-assiest WordPress themes around. In return, sponsoring organizations get to use ThemeButler's valuable real estate to promote their own message, within the theme itself.  Clever, huh?
